Project: Comprehensive Lighting Systems Integration
Location: University at Albany – SUNY, Albany, New York Venues: Performing Arts Center (Main Theatre, Recital Hall, Studio Theater, Lab Theater & Arena Theater) Partners: Designer: AVL Designs, Inc. Electrical: Schenectady Hardware & Electric (SH&E)
Project Overview
The University at Albany Performing Arts Center underwent a significant renovation to modernize its performance environments while preserving the architectural integrity of its iconic mid-century design.

Originally conceived by architect Edward Durell Stone, the PAC’s Main Theatre is defined by its circular auditorium, radiating dome ceiling, perimeter balcony, and central chandelier. While visually striking, these elements create inherent challenges for integrating contemporary theatrical lighting systems.
RKL Lighting was engaged to deliver a full-scale lighting systems upgrade across multiple performance spaces within the PAC. The objective was clear: introduce modern performance capabilities without compromising the architectural identity that defines the venue.
The result is a cohesive, future-ready lighting infrastructure that supports everything from student productions to touring performances and university events—while remaining visually unobtrusive within the space.
Design Challenges
Architectural Sensitivity
The dome ceiling and central chandelier serve as the visual anchor of the theater. Any new lighting system had to disappear into the architecture, not compete with it.
Complex Geometry
The circular auditorium required precise coordination of front-of-house lighting positions to ensure even stage coverage while maintaining clean sightlines for every seat.
Multi-Use Flexibility
As a university venue, the PAC hosts a wide range of programming. The system needed to adapt quickly across performances, lectures, and events without requiring constant reconfiguration.
Modernization of Infrastructure
Beyond fixtures, the project required a full upgrade of control systems, power distribution, and integration to meet current theatrical standards.

Lighting System Implementation
RKL Lighting delivered a comprehensive upgrade focused on performance, efficiency, and long-term adaptability.
LED Theatrical Fixtures
High-performance LED fixtures provide superior color rendering, reduced heat output, and lower maintenance, significantly improving operational efficiency.
Advanced Control Systems
Modern lighting controls enable dynamic programming, allowing designers to create complex scenes and transitions tailored to each event type.
Upgraded Power & Distribution
New electrical infrastructure ensures reliable, scalable power delivery across all performance and front-of-house positions.
Front-of-House Integration
Lighting positions were carefully integrated to enhance stage illumination while preserving sightlines and architectural clarity.
Architectural Integration
A defining success of the project is how seamlessly the new system integrates into the existing architecture.
The dome ceiling remains the visual centerpiece, accentuated by subtle architectural lighting that highlights its radial geometry. The central chandelier continues to anchor the space, while theatrical lighting infrastructure recedes into the background—present in performance, invisible in design.
Audience Experience
The upgrade extends beyond the stage to elevate the overall audience experience.
Layered lighting allows the venue to transition effortlessly between pre-show ambiance, performance focus, and post-event conditions. The result is a more immersive, comfortable environment that enhances both visibility and atmosphere.
Project Outcome
RKL Lighting transformed the University at Albany Performing Arts Center into a modern, flexible performance venue without sacrificing its architectural legacy.
By balancing technical precision with design sensitivity, the new system delivers:
Greater flexibility for diverse programming
Improved energy efficiency and reduced maintenance
Seamless integration with historic architecture
Enhanced experience for performers and audiences
The PAC is now equipped to support the next generation of performances—technically advanced, visually cohesive, and ready for anything the stage demands.
